Pre-emptive Thought
Posted on October 23rd, 2007 by Jonathan Dalton
… not that football is on the mind of anyone other than a born-and-bred sportswriter, but if the San Diego Chargers’ game Sunday is moved here, I have one message to my brethren here in Phoenix:
Do better.
Four years ago the Chargers’ had a Monday night game against the Miami Dolphins moved to Sun Devil Stadium on short notice. Tickets were free; donations for fire relief were being collected at the door.
The game was played in front of a capacity crowd. Donations averaged less than $10 per person.
Disgraceful.
Maybe the opportunity will not arise again this time. Maybe the winds turn and the flames will subside and Qualcomm Stadium can go back to being a sports venue and not a refugee camp. Right now, the Chargers are in town and practicing at the Cardinals’ facilities.
But if not … do better. Show everyone else what Phoenix really can do.
P.S. Looking for updates on the fire? Check Dan Melson’s Searchlight Crusade.
Also, updates for fires up I-5 in Los Angeles have been appearing on CurbedLA.
